What is going to happen to your website when Chrome version 68 is launched in the beginning in July 2018

What is going to happen to your website and how to avoid the problem?

For the past couple of years, there were moves to move to a more sure internet with the push for using SSL certificates and adopt HTTPS encryption.

Firefox started to display the following warning a couple of months ago.

Firefox SSL Warning

Now Google Chrome is planning to do something similar by marking all pages that are not served via HTTPS as insecure.

Chrome Displaying not secure warning

The image above is what Chrome plans on doing. Instead of a simple lock with a line through it, they plan to actually add the words “Not Secure” to every page that is not secure.

The implications for your website can be enormous because unlike the “lock”, words are a lot more noticeable.

Here is an image as displayed on the Google Chrome blog.

Google Chrome http search

Developers and Webmaster have been busy transitioning their sites to HTTPS and making the web safer for everyone and the most current statistics is as follows;

  • Over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows is now protected
  • Over 78% of Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac is now protected
  • 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use HTTPS by default

Think you will be ok?

If you think you will not be affected, think again.
