Why and How to set a Facebook company page username

This is a short article discussing why you should set a username for your company Facebook page and how to do it.

According to Facebook the reason for “Why” is as follows;

It's easier for people to find your Page in search when it has a unique username. Pages with usernames can also create custom URLs that let people quickly visit and message them.

That is true but there is an even more important reason for why you should take the time to set a Facebook Username. By typing “@” followed by the username, you will tag the company and they will receive a notification of the tag that will allow them to respond to the message or posting.

Furthermore, you can use a hashtag with the exact same “name” to “spread” the word about a company and it will probably all link together if enough people use the hashtag.

Guidelines from Facebook for setting a Facebook Username for your company.

When you create a custom username for your Page or profile, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You can only have one username for your Page or profile and you can't claim a username that someone else is already using.
  • Usernames can only contain alphanumeric characters (A–Z, 0–9) and periods ("."). They can't contain generic terms or extensions (.com, .net).
  • Usernames must be at least 5 characters long.
  • Periods (".") and capitalization can't be used to differentiate usernames. For example, johnsmith55, John.Smith55 and john.smith.55 are all considered the same username.
  • Your username must adhere to the Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Keep in mind that you must be an admin to create or change the username for a Page. If you're creating a new page, you may not immediately be able to create a username for your Page, and your Page's username may be removed because of inactivity.

How to change my Facebook Company Page Username?

Facebook now allows you to change your username by following the same steps as above. Keep in mind that the URL for your page will change as well and you might run into problems with pages shared by/from your page. You might lose your views per post. I am not to sure about that.

I would suggest making sure you choose your username wisely and stick to it.
