XMS Pop-Up Module

XMS Pop-Up Module

Introduction and Use of the XMS Systems Pop-Up Module

Although everyone hate the idea of Pop-Ups and a lot of people has "Pop-Up Blockers" installed or the settings in their browsers set to automatically block any pop-ups, there is a need in some cases to make use of Pop-Ups as long is it is done in the right manner and the use appropriate.

An valid example for the use of a Pop-Up is when you want the site visitor to confirm they are over a certain age and can view your content or purchase something from your shop.
You might also want to make sure your registered members take note of certain important information and employing a Pop-Up is perfect for doing so.

Features of XMS Systems Pop-Up module

  • The XMS Systems Pop-Up module is jquery driven and usually "Pop-Up Blockers" should not be able to block them.
  • The Pop-Up is tied to a page and access to that page is controlled by the access level assigned to it.
That means you can launch a Pop-Up to logged in members if you need to by simply limiting the page access.
  • The Pop-Up content is 100% user definable
  • The "Close Button" of a user defined Pop-Up is definable
  • A cookie can be set to stop the Pop-Up from being displayed again
This is obviously depends on the browser settings of the user
  • Said cookie is set as soon as the Pop-Up is displayed, so reloading the page will not display it again
  • The height and width of the Pop-Up is definable
  • The user needs to take an action before the Pop-Up will close.
Clicking outside of the Pop-Up to try and close it will have no effect.

How do I define a Pop-Up?

Pop-Ups can only be displayed by "System Pages", so login to your admin section and navigate to the XMS Systems Page where you want to launch the Pop-Up from. Below the section where you enter the page content you will find the "Pop-Up Screen settings.

As with all XMS Systems functionalities, it is self explanatory, how ever a couple of things needs pointing out to clarify potential problems.

  1. If you choose to use one of the "Pre-Defined" Pop-Ups, there will usually be some action that needs to be performed by the user. In this case select "Yes" in the "Close Button Needed" field.
  2. If you use one of your own pages you will need to select "No" in the "Close Button Needed" field and define the button in the page where you set the content for the Pop-Up.
Failure to do so will leave the site visitor with no way to close the Pop-Up and they will not be able to access anything on your website.
  3. If you want to lead a visitor to a different page, select "Yes" to show a close button and then create a normal link in your content pointing to the page you want the visitor to go. A close button will be created to give the visitor a choice to follow your link or close the Pop-Up and continue with what they come to your site for.
  4. You need to choose either between "Pre-Defined" or "My Pop-Up Page" Not both
  5. Cookie Name
A cookie is a small text file stored on the visitors computer with certain information in it to identify it and store some information that we can use on the website.
We suggest to set the expire day to "0" (zero) while you are working on the "Pop-Up" for testing purposes. If you don't you might not see it again to correct any errors unless you know how to delete cookies from your browser

The following is an example of what will be stored in the XMS Pop-Up Module Cookie
    1. Cookie Name: home_page - You need to define this when you setup your Pop-Up
    2. Value: True - This will be set when the user closes the Pop-Up page
    3. Host: .xms-systems.co.uk - Identifies the website that set the cookie
    4. Expires: 25 January 2015 14:15:30 - This will be the date the cookie expires. Today's date plus what ever you defined when you setup the Pop-Up

Setting up the content of a "My Pop-Up Page.

Go and edit any of your "My Pages"

Two important points:

  1. Make sure to define the "Pop-Up Close Button Text"
  2. Do not use any images that will be larger than the sizes you defined in the "XMS System" page that is going to launch the Pop-Up.

Enjoy and remember "Do not abuse the Pop-Up functionality. It will most certainly cost you site visitors."
